Nigerian Shippers’ Council to Host 17th International Maritime Seminar for Judges

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy and the National Judicial Institute (NJI), is set to host the 17th edition of the International Maritime Seminar for Judges.

 

A press statement signed by Assistant Director, Public Relations Unit, Mrs Rebecca Adamu noted that the seminar, to be chaired by Senator George Akume; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, will take place from July 9th to July 11th, 2024, at the Abuja Continental Hotel (formerly Abuja Sheraton Hotel), Ladi Kwali Centre.

 

Aimed at updating participants on contemporary issues and developments in International Maritime Law and Admiralty Practice, the seminar targets Justices, Judges, in-house counsel, legal practitioners, and industry leaders. Topics of focus include:

 

– Legal Issues in Nigerian Seaports Trade Facilitation

– Shipping in the Age of Innovation and Climate Change: The Role of Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Vessels, and Decarbonisation

– ADR as an Effective Tool in the Resolution of Maritime Disputes: Current Developments and Matters Arising

– Admiralty Jurisdiction Procedure Rules 2023 and Matters Arising – An Appellate Perspective to Admiralty Jurisdiction in Nigeria

– Maritime Law in 2024

 

Prominent jurists, scholars, and maritime/legal practitioners, including foreign experts, will deliver papers addressing these critical issues.

 

The seminar will feature several high profile guests, including the Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, as the Special Guest of Honour. The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Honourable Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will serve as the Chief Host, while the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, H.E Adegboyega Oyetola, will be the Host.

 

Additionally, the event will see the participation of Chief Justices from The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, as well as Justices and Judges from their respective judiciaries. Justices of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and Judges of Federal and State High Courts, alongside legal advisers, in-house counsel, legal and maritime practitioners, and industry stakeholders, are also expected to attend.
