The Nigerian Navy has said that security had greatly improved along the nation maritime frontiers with the installation of modern regional maritime awareness capability systems to monitor the coastal waters.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Sa’ad Ibrahim stated this at an interdenominational thanksgiving service to mark the 56 anniversary of the navy.
Vice Admiral Ibrahim's whose goodwill message was read by the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Johnson Olutoyin, noted that the nation maritime frontiers are now better watched.
He added that the newly created Central Naval Command in Bayelsa State, in the central Niger Delta,  has helped tackle the myriads of security challenges in the waterways.
“We must rededicate our efforts in building a robust service that will be the pride of the nation. We must continue to be loyal to the President and to the nation in general”, he said adding that the navy had collaborated with other security agencies including the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta codenamed Operation Pulo Shield to combat crime in the region such as illegal bunkering and piracy among others.
According to him, “the Nigerian Navy has come to stay in this state. Since our arrival in the state we have been able to contribute immensely to combating the series of illegal activities. No service alone can do it. We must come together to do it and we are doing it in collaboration with other security agencies." He also disclosed that a 31-metre seaward defence boat constructed locally by the Nigerian Navy, the first of its kind in West Africa sub region is to be inaugurated on Friday.
President Jonathan, he said, had approved the purchase of two new offshore patrol vessels even as he is expected to lay the keel for a second seaward defence boat to be built soon.
