Director General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration & Safety Agency (NIMASA) Mr. Temi Omatseye has appealed to states that are yet to embrace the Nigeria Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) to do so in the interest of their youths.
Speaking at the send forth ceremony for Batch Three Beneficiaries of the programme in Lagos last week, Temisan who was represented by the Executive Director Maritime Labour and Cabotage, Mr. Ibrahim Zailani, said the programme was conceived to redress the dearth of seafarers in Nigeria.
He explained that seven states have already keyed into the programme with Lagos state being the latest to embrace NSDP.
The DG said there was an initial apprehension about the programme adding that today NIMASA has achieved remarkable progress.
In all about 61 candidates are being sent to Arnet university in India .
He told the cadets that NIMASA will monitor their progress and give necessary assistance when the need arises.
“If you work hard you will excel and when you graduate the job is already waiting for you. We are sending you to India to acquire education and we will continue to monitor your activities”, the DG said.
He expressed gratitude to the governors of Niger and Kaduna for sponsoring the cadets.
The breakdown of the latest batch of the cadets shows that Kaduna has 31 while Niger State has 25.
Earlier, the liaison officer for NSDP in Niger state Hajia Lami Tumaka urged the cadets to be good ambassadors of Nigeria in India.
“When we started four years ago it was like a dream. We are proud to be part of the second group”, she said.
