The Nigerian Institute of Shipping [NIS] yesterday inaugurated a nine-member executive council to run the affairs of the foremost maritime capacity building institute for the next two years.
The inauguration of the recently-elected executives of the institute took place at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa Lagos. It was witnessed by stakeholders from the private sector as well as agencies in the maritime sector and the Nigerian Navy.

The inauguration of the recently-elected executives of the institute took place at the Rockview Hotel in Apapa Lagos. It was witnessed by stakeholders from the private sector as well as agencies in the maritime sector and the Nigerian Navy.
They include the national president, Mr. John Patrick Egesi, Dr, Samuel Babatunde as 1st Vice President, Apostle Christopher Udomkpong as 2nd Vice President, Capt Tony Onoharigho as third vice president, Francis Omotosho as national secretary, Elufioye Olusegun as national treasurer, Mike Omilani as financial secretary.
Others include, Barrister Victor Ibharalu as the institute’s legal adviser and Mr Sesan Onileimo as the publicity secretary of the institute
The new president, Mr. John Patrick Egesi, who is also a former director general of the National Maritime Authourity (NMA) in his inaugural address called on stakeholders in the maritime sector to support the institute for it to remain relevant.
Egesi stated that the institute remains the sole shipping institute in the country, adding that there is the need for agencies of the government to give support to the organization.
The president reiterated that if the institute fails, the country’s maritime sector might suffer in the critical areas of professional training and manpower development, even as he appealed to stakeholders and government agencies in the sector to support institute for it to remain relevant.
He also lamented the low participation of female in the institute and called on women to be part of the institute’s affairs.
Earlier in his welcome address, outgoing president of NIS, Chief Caleb Okoye called on members of the institute to work together to ensure that the Chartered Institute of Shipping Nigeria (CISN) Bill is passed into law by the National Assembly.
He and a former council member; His Royal Highness; Dr Isreal Nwaiwu were later honoured as Life Patrons of the Institute.
