The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has tasked port users and operators to ensure that they are properly guided by the highest standard of health, environmental and safety.
At a two-day sensitization and enlightenment workshop organized by the Rivers Port management last week, the agency stressed that safety is key to the successful operations of the ports.

The event which took place last week in Port Harcourt was largely attended by port stakeholders, including transporters, truck operators and drivers, NPA staff, union leaders, terminal operators and the general public.
In his message, the Guest Speaker at the safety workshop, Engr. Ejeh J. O of the Health, Safety and Environment Department of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), advised operators and users of the port, to be properly guided on safety of life and properties at the port.
He said that domestic safety should also be given priority by NPA staff, noting that proper maintenance of personal cars of staff will help to curb cases of road accidents that could adversely affect staff of NPA.
Engr. Ejeh also harped on the need for transporters and truck drivers operating at the port to carry out regular maintenance of their haulage trucks, while encouraging them to scrap rickety and old trucks, which he said constitutes danger to life and properties at the port.
“I want to specifically advice truck owners to see safety in the running of their haulage trucks as their watch word”, Engr Ejeh of Safety Department re-stated.
In her address, the Rivers Port manager; Mrs. Carolyn Akum Ufere expressed appreciation for the success of the workshop, and for the participation by all the stakeholders. She thanked the organizers for doing a good job.
Mrs. Ufere urged participants to see safety as a key element in their operations, stating that it is the only tool that can enhance safety at work place, at home and on the road.
“It is important that you see safety as your watch – word. Safety is not only for trucks, and cars, it goes beyond that to what you eat, how you eat, sleep, work and walk everyday of your life”, the Rivers Port Manager stated.
Mrs. Ufere also emphasized that safety issues are not restricted to particular group of persons or companies, but that it also include enhancing domestic safety even at home. The Rivers Port Manager said that her management will continue to accord safety matters its right place, stating that they have taken the burden to intimate members of the port, staff and all the stakeholders in the port on the importance of safety, and working in a safe environment
