The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) last weekend officially flagged- off a project for the re-development of the port facilities at the ‘Bull Nose’ area of the Lagos Port Complex. It is to be built and operated by Messrs Eko Support Services Limited.
Speaking at the flag- off ceremony last weekend, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Engr. Omar Suleiman said that the projected was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for a whopping $124. 4Million.

Speaking at the flag- off ceremony last weekend, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Engr. Omar Suleiman said that the projected was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for a whopping $124. 4Million.
According to Suleiman who was represented by the Acting Executive Director, Engineering and Technical Services, Engr. Sunny Nwobi, the developer of the project; Eko Support Services Limited is to build and operate the terminal for a lease period of 20 years for oil and gas operations.
The project entails the construction of; new 400m x 30m quay wall and deck on piles jetty in front of the existing facility, construction of finger jetties to support boat operations, dredging and reclamation, to carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), report demolition of the four finger jetties among others.
Speaking, Engr. Nwobi said that: "We give appreciation to the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who with the FEC gave approval for all these important projects, it is a project that we ourselves will have done a long time ago, but because of the port reform challenges, by the time its completed, Lagos port will witness a new investment and it will introduce new dimension into the Lagos area".
"We believe that by the time the job is finished, the Nigerian Ports Authority will have a new structure of about 400meters and additional stacking area of 1.7 hectres, and we are also going to cut into the meridian point opposite the jetty so as to expand the turning point to create access to bigger vessels".
"I believe that when the project is completed we are going to have a lot more people employed, we are going to increase in cargo handling capacity at the port and oil and gas activities will also be brought to the West, so it’s a good thing that will augur well for everybody in Lagos" he assured.
Also, the project which is expected to be completed within 24months is expected to improve terminal operations with additional new back up area of 17,000 square metres to the old 4.147 hectres, increase assets base for government and enhance its revenue base, attract foreign investors, provide new berth length of 400m from the old 287m, create new draught of 12.0m from the old 5.4m and so on.
Also speaking on the project, the General Manager of Eko Support Services limited, Mr. Seni Edu reiterated optimism that once completed the project will enhance the capacity of the Lagos ports to handle oil and gas cargo as well as to reduce congestion and assist in employment generation.
