If existing institutions in the maritime industry like Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron can have a department to train dockworkers in the country, it will enhance the level of cargo handling in the nations, so says the general secretary of the Senior Staff Association of Communications Transport and Corporation [SSACTAC], NPA branch Comrade Akin Leoso.

Leoso who disclosed this to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos recently revealed that there is need for an institution in the country to have a syllabus for dockworkers in Nigeria for them to know more about the port and terminal operations, especially cargo handling.
The senior staff association scribe said that such courses in place will enable dockworkers to be more effective and enlightened in port operations, adding that there is need to improve on job specifications of the dockworkers.
He said that some of the dockworkers operating in the country are highly educated; stressing that there is nothing wrong for Maritime Academy of Nigeria to take up the challenge of creating a programme for dockworkers.
Leoso charged the institution to look into the area of creating a department for dockworkers to focus on enhanced productivity and capability of the dockworkers in the country thus resulting to the growth and development of the maritime sector.
‘’I believe if Nigeria government can have a school that can train dockworkers, it is not bad or in the alternative, if MAN Oron can have a department for dockworkers, I don’t think it is a bad innovation’’.
‘’There is nothing wrong if we have an institution that deals with or set the grand rules for a particular trade in order for people to know the ‘dos’ and  ‘don’ts’, it will definitely enhance the productivity of such individual’’.
‘’There is nothing wrong for the dockworkers to improve on their jobs in the ports,  because I know some of the dockworkers in the port are even Masters degree holders,  but with professional courses in place, it will definitely enhance productivity and on that note, I think MAN Oron should look inward to create a syllabus for dockworkers’’.
‘’I think there is nothing wrong for the school  to take up this challenge and dust up their curriculum and get something that the dockworkers in Nigeria can benefit from.’’, Leoso challenged.
