Future seafarers from the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) are no longer required to carry voluminous certificates when they depart for sea duties to oceangoing vessels.
Sailing at full speed ahead on its bid to go paperless, MAAP reportedly launched an e-wallet that would hold the records of cadets from enrollment to graduation, deploying blockchain.
As an added layer of security, the cadets can’t tamper with the records mentioned in the e-wallet while the details get backed up in the MAAP’s central server. The institution further confirms that seafarers will be permitted to use an e-wallet for their lifetime, but vessel owners and staffing firms can also be charged to use this service.
MAAP’s president showed optimism that the success of the e-wallet could act as a catalyst for other maritime institutions to adopt distributed ledgers to digitize operations.
Through the offerings, the requirement for seafarers to bear the risks of damage to documents by keeping them at sea is now minimized or eliminated.
