The IGP’s Special Task force Unit on pipeline vandalism has discovered illegal jetties in Ikorodu and arrested four suspected vandals syphoning petroleum products through the outlets.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Friday Ibadin, in charge of the task force stated this while briefing newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday.
He said that the suspects were arrested on Monday in different parts of Ikorodu.
Ibadin said that two of the suspects built their houses close to the creeks with a view to carrying out their vandalism business smoothly at their backyard.
He said that many communities in Ikorodu area had been compromised for vandalism.
“We heard that for three days, vandals were syphoning petroleum products at the NNPC platform, near Arepo.
“We got information that the suspects were coming from Ikorodu area. We had an encounter with them exchanging gun fire for many hours.
“We later stopped firing in order to avoid fire outbreak at the platform.
“We laid ambush in Ikorodu axis, where one person was arrested. Through his confessional statement, we arrested three others, including one police informant.
“We never knew the police informant was one of the syndicates in the area. We recovered 60 (50 litres) Jerry cans filled with petroleum products,’’ Ibadin said.
The Sector Commander of the IGP’s taskforce in Lagos State, DSP Osayande Onaghise, later led some journalists to some of the communities, including Abule-Oba and Kadoko, Konu in Ikorodu for a first hand assessment.
Areas visited in the communities showed that every house built close to the creeks was a special jetty platform to siphon NNPC petroleum products.
A house allegedly built by suspected vandals was sighted on top of water at Abule-Oba, with a wide water channel leading to the building.
The waters in the area were polluted with petroleum products, while hundreds of jerry cans of different sizes tied to each other were discovered on the water.
