Mr. Salem Amachree, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the Port Police (PP) division yesterday said that more inter-agency co-operation would rid the nation’s ports of miscreants.

Amachree told journalists that enhanced inter-agency co-operation was a pivotal agenda of the division’s Commissioner of Police (CP) in charge of Lagos ports, Mrs.  Sherifat Olajokun.

“Since her resumption, the new division’s CP has been engaging in series of interactions with other security and non-security agencies at ports to make there safe for business,“ he said.

“We in the division believe that greater inter-agency collaboration will remove criminals and unwanted elements from our ports.“

Amachree said that Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV) needed to be introduced in every corner of access roads to ports.

He said that the control of traffic on roads in and out of ports would be stress-free if the CCTV were in place.

“The NPA also needs to take more seriously the erection of gates and perimeter fences to reduce the human traffic at the ports,“ he said.

Amachree said that the Nigeria Police was ever-willing to work and synergise with any agency operating in every port, to assist the government to achieve it aims.

“More internal vigilance will enable us eradicate the stiff neck `wharf rats` that refuse to change for better,“ he said.

He said that constant patrol and increased vigilance by the police of ports in recent times had reduced “to the barest“ the activities of “wharf rats“.
