The Rivers/Bayesa Shippers’ Association has elected new officers to run the affairs of the association. They are Mr. Ofon Eli Udofia, president, Chief Robert Tamuno, vice president, Elder Edet Nkanta, treasurer, Chief George Ajaero, financial secretary, Kelson Alalibo, PRO, and Mrs. Patience Bassey, assistant general secretary.
The election was the climax of series of meetings and consultations the zonal coordinator of the south-south zone shippers’ council, Mr. Maurice Effanga embarked upon after resuming office in Port Harcourt.
Speaking after the election, the newly elected president Mr. Ofon Eli Udofia thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and other elected members.
He solicited their support to move the forward as he promised to run an open administration.
Mr. Udofia told Shipping Position Weekly that his primary task will be to sensitise the shippers on the need to be active in the association. He also promised to rebrand the association. “It is better to be a strong group than be a strong individual”, he said.
Udofia said the association will act as pressure group to pressurize the concessionaires and NPA as well as other stakeholders on the need to dredge Port Harcourt to allow bigger vessels birth there. “The association will also partner with the relevant federal agencies to improve the security in the port area by taking advantage of the current government’s amnesty programme”.
Mr. Udofia thanked the immediate past president of the association, Eze Engr G. C. Adiukwu for his contributions to the association.
