Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the Okirika community have threatened alongside to drag the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to court over the company’s alleged continuous pollution of the waters in Rivers State.
Amaechi gave the indication last week in Okirika, Rivers State during a town hall meeting with the residents of Okirika Local Government Area. The meeting was part of the governor’s tour of all the 23 council areas in Rivers State where he decided to interact with the people directly.

Amaechi gave the indication last week in Okirika, Rivers State during a town hall meeting with the residents of Okirika Local Government Area. The meeting was part of the governor’s tour of all the 23 council areas in Rivers State where he decided to interact with the people directly.
He said that it was regrettable that NNPC had continued to pollute the land, water and rivers in Rivers state, particularly in okirika, saying that the abuse has been ongoing for a long time.
Gov Amaechi said that despite the constant complains from the settlers of the area about the health implication of the pollution; the NNPC had refused to make any effort to address the problems.
“How we will do it is that Amaechi as a private individual, together with Okirika people will sue NNPC to court over their pollution in Rivers State”, Gov Amechi told Okirika people during his town hall meeting last week.
