The newly- established Shipping College of Nigeria which is the brainchild of the Nigeria Institute of Shipping [NIS] will soon commence its training programme at the study centre in Apapa.
The Registrar of the Nigeria Institute of Shipping, Mr. Sampson Chima told our correspondent that the new institute will kick off as soon as the renovation works are over, adding that there is need to refurbish the study centre for it to be conducive for the students.
To facilitate the smooth take- off, the college has commenced the admission of students into its National Innovation Diploma {NID}, Shipping Management for the 2012/2013 academic session. The classes are expected to start by the ending of April, 2012.
The NIS registrar said, ‘’other courses run by the college include: Certificate course in freight forwarding practice, oil and gas distribution management, marine survey and other maritime related courses’’.
According to him, the Shipping College of Nigeria is an arm of the Nigerian Institute of Shipping {NIS} established to bridge the gap of human capital and capacity building in the maritime industry.
‘’Apart from bridging the gap of manpower development, the college will also create a career path for the younger ones who are seeking to take maritime as a career’’.
Chima said: “the college will also resolve the issues of inadequate training and the preponderance of uncertified personnel in the maritime industry as whole’’.
‘’The courses are in line with international best practices as well as the standard set by the National Board for Technical Education {NBTE} curriculum.
The college plans to admit only 200 students for starters.  The form is presently on sale at the Nigerian Institute of Shipping secretariat in Apapa’’.
