The Shipping Management Department of Stars Maritime Academy last week took a tour of the ENL Terminal at the Apapa Port in Lagos in order to obtain firsthand practical experience of what is being taught in the class rooms.
Apart from taking a tour of the terminal, the cadets who are fifty five in number, led by top management of the academy also boarded a vessel at the terminal called Cosco Kunlun Shan so as to identify the components in comparison to what is taught while in class.

Speaking with Shipping Position Daily shortly after the tour, Head of Shipping Management Department, Mr. Chris Sadoh explained that the excursion is designed for the cadets to see what they have been lectured in the classroom, adding that education does not end in the classroom.
According to him, “with professional programmes like the ones they teach in our Academy, students need to be taken out to establishments or companies that are into what they teach them in the class”.
He said, “Students were taken to ENL terminal, where they were opportune to board a vessel, they went round, saw the crew members, they saw all the components that make the ship and today they are overwhelmed and are convinced that what we have been teaching them in classroom is what they are seeing with their eyes”.
Chris also said that this is just one experience out of the many excursions that have been given to the cadets.
According to him, the students have been promised voyage on different vessels because “what you see in a voyage may not be what you will see in the next voyage and apart from that we don’t attend one terminal, we visit so many terminals because we have a lot of terminals as long as the port is concerned”.
Apart from the thrill of the event, Chris said that it is meant to equip the cadets with the right connections they needed even after they must have passed out of the academy. He said that these connections will assist the students so that they can be absolved for their Internship in order to have the practical knowledge n the future.
Chris further relayed to our Correspondent that although the Institution may not be responsible for job attainments for the students after graduation but has a way of giving back to them.
According to him, “Every higher institution does not train as well as give employments, ours is not an exception but what we do on graduation is to issue them a letter which will enable the students to go into any of the companies to have at least a year practical training, thereafter they forward a letter from wherever they had the training to the school before they are being issued their certificates”.
