Pirates have become better organised and are taking advantage of the chaos in Somali, The International Maritime Organisation has said. The IMO secretary general Efthimios Mitropoulos urged nations to dispatch more piracy patrol ships at sea. He said despite efforts by party states to fight it, piracy have gone up.
He was speaking at the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre at the Kenya the Ports Authority headquarters. He said the current naval vessels that aid in sea patrol against the menace are not enough, adding that the piracy has become more lucrative and the pirates more daring.
Mitropoulos, who was in Kenya in 2006 when he opened the centre, said Kenya and the centre's staff in particular, will now have added responsibilities of monitoring piracy activities off the Somali Coast.
He, last week commissioned the first three information sharing centres on piracy and armed robbery against ships in the Western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. The other two centres are in Dar-es-Salaam and Sana'a in Yemen
