Stock Market Closes Week With 31% Decline In Volume 42% Improvement In Turnover

·         Dips by N100bn to end the week

At the end of the last weekday of trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX), a total of 205,893,205 shares in 4,986 deals, corresponding to a market value of NGN 6,380,220,275.30, were traded. Compared with the previous NGX trading day (Thursday, October 19), Friday’s data shows 31% decline in volume, 42% improvement in turnover, but 9% decline in deals. The current market capitalization of the Nigerian Stock Exchange is NGN 36.8 trillion.

In the aggregate, 115 NGX listed equities participated in trading, ending with 14 gainers and 20 losers. Thomas Wyatt Nigeria led the gainers with 10% share price appreciation closing at NGN 3.63 per share, followed by Ikeja Hotel (+7.51%), Omatek Ventures (+7.14%) and Aiico Insurance (+4.48%). On the losing side, Cadbury Nigeria came out last with an end-of-day price depreciation of 10% at NGN 12.60 per share, followed by Flour Mills Nigeria (-9.03%), Sovereign Trust Insurance (-8.33%) and Guinea Insurance (-8%). Fidelity Bank recorded the highest volume of 28.1 million traded shares, followed by FCMB Group (18m), Zenith Bank (18m) and United Bank for Africa (13.4m).

Regarding the performance of NGX market indices, the benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) shed 183.39 (-0.27%) points to close at 66,915.41, representing a 1-week loss of 0.42%, a 4-week loss of 2.08%, but an overall year-to-date gain of 30.56%. Other remarkable indices that performed were the NGX Top 30 Index (-0.25%; -0.38% 1WK; +33.57% YTD), NGX Top 50 Index (-0.39%; -1.32% 1WK; +39.68% YTD), NGX Banking Index (+0.12%; +3.52% 1WK; +66.25% YTD), NGX Insurance Index (+0.08%; -0.96% 1WK; +57.19% YTD), NGX Premium Index (+0.02%; +0.54% 1WK; +37.37% YTD), and NGX Oil & Gas Index (+0%; -0.02% 1WK; +98.25% YTD).

Similarly, the market capitalization decreased on Friday by N100 billion to N36.764 trillion from N36.864 trillion recorded at the close of the previous trading day, while the market turnover increased to N6.38 billion from N4.48  billion.
