The Tin Can Island command of the Nigeria Custom Service says it has collected N85, 180,533,598 as revenue into Federal Government coffers between January and May, 2012.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command, Mr. Chris Osunkwo, told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos yesterday that the command which houses one of the largest vehicle importing terminals is expected to collect an average of N22billion every month.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the command, Mr. Chris Osunkwo, told Shipping Position Daily in Lagos yesterday that the command which houses one of the largest vehicle importing terminals is expected to collect an average of N22billion every month.
However, a breakdown of the revenue shows that in January, the command made N14, 584,199,513, in February the figures stood at N19, 270,326,845.00, while in March; it stood at N19, 003,749,243.
In April, the figure collected was N15, 212,117,479 and in May, the command collected N17, 110,140,518.
According to the image maker, during the period under review, the command also made a number of seizures with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N149, 008,800. These seizures include; 20 units of 40-foot containers, 12 units of 20-foot containers and 1 unpacked vehicle.
Osunkwo also said that, the command always arrested suspects in connection with each of the seizures made, it but added that all of them have been granted bail according to the law.
He said that the era of abandoned seizure does not exist anymore at the command and that either the freight forwarder or his importers are usually arrested in connection with any wrong declaration or where there are discrepancies in declaration.
“There is nothing like abandoned seizure anymore, for any seizure, we make arrest. We arrest either the agent or his principal, but because the law says that we shouldn’t keep them longer than necessary, the one we cannot grant bail, we take them to court and they get court bail”, he explained.
He expressed optimism about the command meeting its revenue target for the year, saying that; “the truth is that we are making serious efforts to actualize our targets, but there is nothing done by a human being that is perfect, so there are inconsistencies and imperfections here and there” .
“We envisaged hitting N110Billion between January and May this year, but by the end of May we had N85.1, so at least we are trying and we hope to get there. We are supposed to make an average of 22Billion every month which translates into N264Billion for the year” he explained.
