Uneasy Calm Returns To Seme Border After Smuggler/Customs Clash

Normalcy has returned to Seme border after Wednesday’s clash between daredevil smugglers and Customs officers at the border.
The battled led to the death of two of the smugglers in circumstances which was explained as not having anything to do with Customs.

One of the sources, who is a top flight licensed customs agent in Seme told our correspondent that contrary to earlier speculations that the smugglers died in a duel with Customs officers, they actually died when the truck which they were using to convey cartons of frozen poultry products had an accident.
They were actually running away from Customs, but their truck collided with a stationary object, leading to their instant death.
“Of course, when such a thing happens, there will be tension and apprehension, but all that has died down, there is no problem at all”, he assured.
He however advised the Customs as well as members of the border community to be very vigilant.
Shipping Position Daily recalls that deceased smugglers were coming from across the border carrying poultry products, on sighting a team of anti-smuggling officers around Gbagi, very close to Seme border, they drove into the bush and were pursued by the Customs officers.
It was in the course of the chase that the smugglers’ vehicle had an accident.
News of the death led to a protest by some youths in the Gbagi area, which snowballed into a riotous situation.
