Heroic Rescue at Sea: 34 Saved from Burning Vessel by Liberian-flagged Bulker

The Liberian-flagged bulker ELEEN ARMONIA rescued 34 crew members from a burning vessel on 26th February. The burning vessel was later identified to be the fishing vessel Hasil Abadi 28.

The ELEEN ARMONIA en route from Port Klang to Durban spotted the burning vessel 800 kilometers south-east of Sri Lanka.

The initial distress call was issued by the fishing vessel upon the stern catching fire. The ELEEN ARMONIA spotted the thick clouds of smoke rising on the horizon and approached to find the burning vessel with the crew members still onboard waving frantically. The crewmembers had gathered on the bow of the vessel.

The ELEEN ARMONIA pulled beside the burning vessel, and the crew aboard tried to extinguish the fire with hoses. Despite the efforts, the fire had been burning for too long, and the ship was reduced to a wreck. The crew of the Hasil Abadi 28 was taken aboard and provided with medical care and food.

The rescued crewmembers were then transferred to a sister vessel of the Hasil Abadi 28, which was also operating in the area.

Russian-flagged Research Vessel Sinks in the Black Sea Near Novorossiysk

The Russian-flagged research vessel ASHAMBA sank in the Black Sea near Novorossiysk, Russia, on 22nd February. Initial findings indicate rapidly built icing to be the cause of instability and the subsequent sinking of the vessel.

The vessel is owned by the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology and was moored near Novorossiysk. The onset of a winter storm caused a rapid buildup of ice that the crew could not keep up with and clear in time. This led to a buildup of ice, leading to the vessel listing and then subsequently capsizing.

Reports indicate that the risk of pollution is limited since the vessel was carrying only around 200 liters of diesel. The ship’s owner is to deploy booms to contain any oil leak that does happen.

The Shirshov Institute has stated that they are drawing out plans to raise the vessel in spring time if the weather is accommodating. Investigations have been opened into the incident by the Transport Prosecutor’s Office in Novorossiysk and by the Investigative Committee of Russia’s transport division.
