WEEKLY GLOBAL MARINE INCIENTS

Explosion at Barcelona Port Claims One Life, Leaves Three Injured

An explosion occurred at the Port of BARCELONA, Spain on 21st January. Although the explosion was quickly contained and the fire was not allowed to spread beyond the port, it led to the death of one person and three others being injured.

The incident occurred at around 10:10 AM local time on the Energy Wharf of the port of BARCELONA, where the chemicals, natural gas, and petroleum products are handled. The source of the explosion was a tanker in the facility operated by Terminales Portuarias S.L. (TEPSA), filled with methyl acetate that was undergoing maintenance.

The fire was extinguished around 40 minutes after it started due to the quick response of the firefighting teams.

One person was killed in the incident, and one other was grievously injured and had to be taken to a nearby hospital. Although two other people also suffered injuries. Fortunately, their injuries were not severe, and they were given medical attention at the port itself.

People in companies and facilities near the port of BARCELONA were advised to stay indoors as a precaution.

 

Cargo Vessel HAVELLAND Suffers Engine Failure in the Kiel Canal

The cargo vessel HAVELLAND suffered engine failure while on the westbound transit of the Kiel Canal, Germany, on 20th January. No reports of injuries or pollution from the vessel have been released.

The incident occurred at around 11:53 AM local time when the vessel was traveling from SUNDSVALL, Sweden to HULL Port, United Kingdom. The vessel suffered an engine failure and ended up running into the southern embankment of the canal.

However, the vessel managed to start one of its engines and generated enough power to pull itself free. The tugboat Parat was dispatched to aid the vessel and escort it to Rendsburg.

The HAVELLAND is a general cargo ship that is 110.9 metres long, 16.5 metres wide, and has a gross tonnage of 4,966. It was built in 2012 and is flagged in Portugal.

 

Ship Collision in Northern Horsburgh Waters: No Injuries or Hazards Reported

On 21st January, a collision occurred between a bulk carrier, SHANDONG MISSION, and a barge, TB Sinhin 5. The incident took place in northern Horsburgh, in the vicinity of Indonesian territorial waters.

According to the report of Vessel Traffic System (VTS) in Batam, at around 09:46 AM local time, SHANDONG MISSION, en route from Singapore to Australia, collided with the TB Sinhin 5, which was traveling from Port Klang to Kota Kinabalu.

In the collision, SHANDONG MISSION sustained minor damage to its starboard bow, but there were no signs of leakage or injuries. On the other hand, TB Sinhin 5 reported damage to its portside hull, resulting in leakage and causing the barge to tilt by 10°–15°. Some of the barge’s white brick cargo fell into the sea, but no hazardous materials were involved in the incident.

At around 11:59 AM local time, TB Sinhin 5 diverted its route and returned to Johor with a 150-meter towing line to ensure its stability. A few minutes later, at 12:19 PM local time, the bulk carrier was deemed seaworthy and continued its voyage.

Indonesian maritime authorities including VTS Batam, the Tanjung Uban PLP Base, and the Tanjung Uban Port Authority coordinated to ensure maritime safety. No injuries or hazardous material spills were reported in the incident.

South Korean-Flagged Container Ship Suffer Engine Room Fire Near Japan

A global marine claims management and recovery services company reported an engine room fire aboard the South Korean-flagged container ship DONGJIN FORTUNE. The incident took place on 21st January, approximately one nautical mile north of Tsuwaji Island, Japan.

The crew promptly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported. However, the containership was rendered unnavigable and towed by a tug to Hiroshima for inspection and possible repair.

DONGJIN FORTUNE is a 2002-built container ship that departed from BUSAN, South Korea, on 20th January. The vessel has a length of 130.36 meters and a breadth of 20.03 meters.
