President of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Chief Eugene Nweke yesterday urged the Federal Government to appoint a commercial regulator to check arbitrary charges at the ports.
Nweke said in Lagos that it was only the commercial regulator that could handle the challenges facing freight forwarders at the ports.
He said that in the absence of the commercial regulator, freight forwarders should come up with an alternative method of checking multiple charges being levied on cargoes.

The NAGAFF president also complained about delays in the refund of container deposits which, according to him, was taking between three weeks to two months, after all contractual agreements had been met. Such refunds ought to be made immediately the containers were returned.
Nweke said that this practice was not in tune with international best practice.
He said that if an importer made a container deposit of N180, 000, after returning the containers, he should get a refund.
He said that some of the shipping companies usually waived the container deposits, while many would not do so.
Nweke commended the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) for assisting freight forwarders in overcoming the challenges of obtaining refund on container deposits.
He urged government to address other challenges confronting the freight forwarding profession.
