On Friday, May 31, Adani Ports and Logistics announced in its press release that Adani International Ports Holding Pte. Ltd (AIPH) had won the deal with Tanzania Port Authority to operate and manage the DAR ES SALAAM Port’s Container terminal berth 2.
AIPH is a subsidiary of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd.(APSEZ) and has signed a 30-year concession agreement with the Tanzania Port Authority to operate and handle the container terminal berth 2 in DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania.
East Africa Gateway Limited (EAGL) is a joint venture formed by AIPH, AD Ports Group, and East Harbour Terminal Limited(EHTL). The APSEZ is the major shareholder of EAGL and will include it in its financial records. EAGL has signed a Share Purchase Agreement for $39.5 million with Hutchison Port Limited and Harbour Investment Limited to acquire 95% stakes in Tanzania International Container Terminal Service Limited (TICTS).
Currently, TICTS employs the port workers and owns all the equipment at the DAR ES SALAAM Port. After the acquisition, Adani will manage the Container terminal berth 2 through TICTS.
The Managing Director of APSEZ stated that managing and operating the DAR ES SALAAM Port’s Container terminal berth 2 is a part of their aim to become one of the largest port operators in the world by 2030. He also stated that the APSEZ network and expertise in port and logistics will enable them to increase trade volume and economic cooperation between Adani ports and East Africa.
DAR ES SALAAM Port is a gateway port that has a well-connected network of roads and railways. DAR ES SALAAM Port’s Container terminal berth 2 has four berths with an annual holding capacity of 1 million TEU. In 2023, the Container terminal berth 2 of DAR ES SALAAM Port handled 0.83 million TEU of containers.
