Akume Calls For Technology Engagement In Transport Sector To Boost Efficiency

Sen. George Akume, the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), on Tuesday in Abuja canvassed for the engagement of technology in the transport sector to boost its efficiency.

Akume, who was represented by Mr Maurice Mbaeri, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the SGF, made the appeal during his remarks at the 6th National Transport Conference 2024.

Akume, who was also the Chairman of the conference , said  utilising technology  had revolutionized transport sector worldwide in terms of reducing congestion, speeding travel times and optimising routes.

According to him, such effective technologies include- smart traffic management, railway corporation digitalization, railway automated signaling, inter-switch, pay stack, among others.

 “Technology will enhance safety like predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring, and automated emergency response; improve customer experience like personalised services, real-time information, and seamless payments.

“ Also, application innovation will help environmental sustainability- reduced emissions, optimized fuel consumption, and eco-friendly alternatives and economic growth to job creation, increase productivity, and stimulate economic development,” he said.

He said  there was need to invest in digital infrastructure and transport system for the sector to properly enhance trade and promote national economy.

According to him, the Policy on Land transport system to inprove regulatory framework is now waiting for the approval of the Federal Executive Council.

Earlier, In his opening remarks, the CIOTA President, Dr Segun Obayendo, said the theme of the event: “ Sustainable Transportation in a Disruptive Era: the Challenges of Developing Economies“ was carefully chosen to address challenges in transport sector.

 He called on stakeholders in the sector to collaborate and  collectively contribute their quota to improve integrity of the transport sector in the country.

According to him, CIOTA will keep advancing the study, training and practicing of transport management and administration in Nigeria.

“This gathering is for knowledge exchange and critical for addressing challenges faces by transport sector.

“It will allow for dissemination of best practices and exploration of innovation solution to enhance transport management in Nigeria.

“CIOTA stands as a leading professional body in Nigeria, dedicated to enhancing transport training, certification and membership,” he said.
