National President of the association, Prince Olayiwola Shittu who gave the commendation at the debate between aspiring chairmen and secretaries in the coming Western zones election yesterday in Lagos, also stressed need to hold debates before election day, adding that it gives room for the electorates to know the contestants better.
Shittu also lauded the effort of Firstmediacon Network Limited; owners of Shipping Position Daily Newspaper and Shipping Position Live on Star FM for the initiative and courage in ensuring that the voices of the contestants are heard before the election proper.
According to the president, the debate serves as a turning point in life of the association, adding that the initiative was not meant for the western zone elections alone, but for the entire association nationwide.
He said that contestants of the western zone election are of great concern to the association even as he called on contestants to fulfill their promises when voted into powers.
‘’I am very interested in the kind of promises some contestants are making; he pointed out, adding that ‘’this is the first time something like this is happening and it will only get better in the future ‘’.
He called on eligible voters to listen to contestants’ remarks carefully before making their final decision on their preferred candidate.
‘’I must commend also the Shipping Position group who has also identified with us for so long for the initiative ‘’.
He predicted that in the nearest future, such debates will hold during holiday seasons where contestants are given enough time for express themselves.
However while fielding questions from journalists at the event, Chairman Board Of Trustee of ANLCA, Chief Henry Njoku said that the debate, which is being held for the first time was quite commendable, adding that it is a new beginning in electoral matters of the association.
He added that ‘’ it is the beginning of better things to come in the area of organizing elections by the association.’’
On his part, Publicity Secretary of the ANLCA, Mr.Obicee Okonkwo stressed that the initiative by Shipping Position Daily was a bold step and that the maiden edition of the debate is a turning point in electoral issues of ANLCA.
He also commended staff and management of the organization for their efforts.
