The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Diko Abdulahi Inde has provided six pick-up vans to the Federal Operations Unit Zone 'C', Owerri to beef up its activities ant-smuggling operations.

The FOU Zone ‘C’ which is based in Owerri, Imo state, comprises of all the states in south-south and south -east regions

The Controller in charge of the unit, Deputy Comptroller Victor Dimka also seized the opportunity of receiving the Pick Up vans in Oweeri last week to call for synergy between the public as well as sister agencies to curb activities of smugglers in the zone.

Dimka while inspecting the pick-up vans at the zonal headquarters of the Customs in Owerri, reiterated the effort of the zone to eradicate smuggling because, according to him, it is injurious not only to the economy of the country but to individuals as well.

He also disclosed that since assumption of duty as Area Controller, the unit  has recorded eight  seizures with a Duty Paid Value of  N164Million, adding that three  suspects are being held in connection with the seizure while eight cases are pending in the court.

He appealed to the public to collaborate with the Customs to track down those who engage in the illegal act of smuggling.
While commending the Comptroller General of Customs for sending the vehicles that were  donated by RIMIDAN to the zone assured that it will facilitate FOU Zone’ C’s operation to fish out smugglers even in their hideout.

He said that the vehicle were sent from their headquarters in Abuja to boost their anti smuggling activities in the zone, adding that if the success recorded within the shortest period were achieved in the past, there is hope that the zone would record more success in the fight against smugglers.

He advised the smugglers to look for alternative means of livelihood in their own interest, adding that the zone would not relent in the fight.

The Comptroller stated the challenges facing the zone since the impounding and destruction of frozen poultry is the change of strategy by the smugglers through which they smuggled in banned products, adding that their actions would not deter Customs.
