The National Inland Waterways Authority’s (NIWA) Lagos Area Office says it rescued 15 passengers following a boat mishap near the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, after an accident involving a 17-passenger boat near the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge.
One passenger is still missing, while one was confirmed dead.
An official statement from NIWA which was made available to our correspondent disclosed that the 17-passenger boat named T-BEN, en route from Addax Jetty to Ibeshe around 6:50pm on Wednesday faced a critical situation after colliding with an unidentified object in the channel.
According to NIWA, in response to the emergency, the captain skillfully guided the vessel to the shore to ensure the safety of the passengers, and promptly informed, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Search and Rescue Team, alongside other relevant agencies, swiftly initiated the rescue operations.
It added that, 15 passengers have been successfully rescued from the distressed boat, leaving one passenger still missing and one confirmed deceased.
According to NIWA, the search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the missing individual. It also noted that authorities are actively involved in the operation, and further updates will be provided as the rescue mission progresses.
