A federal high court in Lagos has adjourned the case between frontline downstream operators; Capital Oil and Gas Industries and residents of Beachland estate; a highbrow residential area in Apapa, Lagos.
The court, in its last sitting presided over by Justice Ibrahim Auta, adjourned the case till January 2010.
Residents of the estate had dragged the oil and gas company to court, demanding among other things that the new pilling and construction works on the additional flammable liquid tanks placed by he company along the east side of the estate be stopped.
According to the chief operations officer of Seaview Investments limited, owners of the estate, Mr. Olugbenga Egujobi who confirmed to Shipping Position Weekly the case will not come up until next year.
Egujobi explained that “the case has been adjourned till next year January, because the defendants have said that they needed more time so as to memorize their papers”.
According to him, their own lawyers are yet not yet to meet the demands as placed by them, and in his words “all our demands regarding the case are not being met yet and we are still in court”.
Egunjobi said that this has however not deterred construction activities going on at the site of Capital oil and that the residents still have to endure the sound of machinery and other noise that comes from the construction sites.
Beachland estate was commissioned in 1976 and is currently home to about 1,500 people predominantly top company executives, comprising both expatriates and Nigerians.
