The Tin Can Island Port chapter of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has called on Nigerians to always identify with the less privileged and the needy in the society.
Acting chairperson of Tin Can Island chapter of the association, Mrs. Christy Binga made the call when she led other top officers of the chapter and those of the Lagos Industrial Command to some orphanages where they donated commodities to less privilege children.
The Tin Can Island Port chapter of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has called on Nigerians to always identify with the less privileged and the needy in the society.
Acting chairperson of Tin Can Island chapter of the association, Mrs. Christy Binga made the call when she led other top officers of the chapter and those of the Lagos Industrial Command to some orphanages where they donated commodities to less privilege children.
Some of the places visited by the COWA delegation includes, Modupe Cole Memorial Child Care and Treatment Home for handicapped and mentally-retarded children in Yaba Lagos, among others.
While donating food items including bags of rice, drugs, beverages, cartons of ground nut oil, multi-purpose soap, cartons of sugar, toilet rolls, and soft drinks, Mrs. Binga noted that
COWA is committed to identifying with the plight of the less privileged in the society and charged other public spirited Nigerians to emulate this gesture
The gesture according to her was part of social corporate responsibility of COWA
in touching the lives of the less-privileged in the society.
“We are here to touch on the lives of these children who need more support from the society. We have the objective of promoting the welfare of others and our neighbors. We are here to make them feel part of the society. We are to take care of part of their needs in the
little way we can,’’ she told the co-coordinator of the school.
She also disclosed that COWA has a policy of visiting the less- privileged from time to time, especially on a special day like Nigerian Independent celebration.
Coordinator of the home, Mrs Folake Durowoju, expressed appreciation to the association for the visit, even as she thanked the leadership for its kind gesture.
“Although the home has poor infrastructure, the visit will make the children feel that they are part of the society”, she said
According to her, the children needed such visits to help them feel needed in the society, adding that the home, which was founded in 1960 by Modupe Cole is now managed by the Lagos State Government.
“The school still has some constraints as the government alone cannot do it all. We have children in different categories. The ones that can be trained through university and those that cannot cope are trained to do various trades and crafts” she added.
It was gathered that the major constraints being faced by the home include accommodation and educational training materials, among several others.
Principal of the home, Mrs. Florence Kayode, who spoke while conducting the COWA officials round the facility, disclosed that the home has 473 inmates with about 120 members of staff who attend to them.
