SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited, one of the destination inspection service providers, has been commended for exposing personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service to on- the -job training in best practices relating to price verification, classification and risk management.
Assistant Comptroller of Customs in-charge of Training and Staff Development, Mr Salisu Argungu, gave the commendation on behalf of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at the “passing out” ceremony which held recently for the second batch of customs officers on a secondment programme at the SGS Lagos head office.
Represented at the ceremony by the Controller in charge of raining and staff development at NCS headquarters, Mr. Agyo S.B., ACG Argungu equally commended the Federal Government for providing the enabling environment for personnel of the Service to update their skills in modern trade services as well as gained experience in information technology and equipment employed in the cargo clearance procedures, by being attached to companies like SGS.
“On behalf of Nigeria Customs Service, we are quite pleased with the quality of training being offered by SGS to our officers. I would like to also thank the Federal Government for putting together this type of agreement where our officers would be trained on global best practices in modern customs procedures.” he said.

Also speaking, managing director of SGS Scanning Nigeria Limited, Mr Nigel Balchin, disclosed that his company had since 2006 commenced an intensive training programme for customs officers in line with the agreement signed with the Federal Government, even as he expressed satisfaction with the co-operation extended by NCS Management on capacity building.
The seconded batch of 12 officers commenced the training programme on 11 May 2009 at SGS Lagos office. The participants drawn from various units across the country had an overview of services being performed by modern customs administrations. This was later followed by courses on the very technical areas like price verification, classification and use of information technology systems.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, class leader and newly promoted Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Mr Gaya Y. Mohammed, gave kudos to the Management and staff of SGS for their co-operation, support and incentives provided during the period of their training programme. “We say a big thank you to SGS and like to also acknowledge the excellent virtues of this wonderful organisation, we have enjoyed our stay with you and we can only pray that this programme be sustained”.
Certificates were later presented to the nine officers that successfully completed the programme. A new set of officers are expected to undergo a similar training exercise by September.
