The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service has repelled an attack by a smuggling gang in Badagry, Lagos State, in the early hours of Sunday, June 2, 2024.

A press statement by the Public Relations Officer, of the unit; Mr Theophilus Duniya, confirmed that the clash occurred around 3am, during an interception operation by the waterside.

He said a joint patrol team comprising FOU A personnel and soldiers intercepted a boat carrying smuggled rice and vehicles by the waterside in Badagry. While evacuating the goods, the service stated that a group of men, led by an individual armed with charms and a matchet, attacked the team.

The attack resulted in injuries to a Customs officer and a soldier, with the officer sustaining a facial injury and the soldier suffering a leg injury.

However, the service explained that the personnel acted in self-defense and maimed the leader of the gang to prevent further harm. The gang leader was later evacuated for medical attention but unfortunately, he died en route to the hospital.

Reacting, the Controller of FOU zone ‘A’, Comptroller Kola Oladeji, commended the Army and Customs personnel for their bravery and professional conduct in the face of danger.

He reiterated the Unit’s commitment to combating smuggling and urged parents and community leaders to discourage their wards from engaging in criminal activities that could put their well-being and other citizens at risk.

He stated that the incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement agents in their efforts to curb smuggling and other criminal activities.

He said  the Nigeria Customs Service has been at the forefront of the fight against smuggling, and this incident demonstrates the service’s unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and economy.

The Comptroller also  appealed to parents and community leaders to discourage their wards from engaging in criminal activities while calling on action for all stakeholders to join hands in promoting a safe and secure society.
