The Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ikeja, on yesterday honoured four officers of the unit for their excellent performance in the months of March and April.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the unit, Mr Uche Ejesieme, said in Lagos that the reward was based on the commitment and dedication of the officers to the service.
Commenting on the award, the PRO said:  “Today what you actually witnessed is a kind of sustenance of the legacy of identifying officers and men of the unit that have excelled very remarkably in the discharge of their official assignments.
“The essence of this award is to motivate and encourage officers to put in their best so as to realise the mission and the vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Abdulahi, and of course, the management’s team.
“We have identified four officers two; for the month of April; and two for the months of March for this recognition.
“The month of March we have Chief Superintendent of Customs Kirawa Abdulahi was actually given this award in appreciation of some of his remarkable seizures.
“There is a lot of emphases on importation of rice through the land border, it is important to clarify that rice is no contraband, but what government is saying is to actually bring them through the seaports not through the land borders.
“For this singular reason, the unit decided to recognise this officer because since the time he started this assignment as the Officer-in- Charge of the headquarters monitoring team for the pass two or three month, he has seized a total of 9, 876 bags of 50kg parboiled rice that came through the unapproved roads.
“And in poultry product, he has also singularly made a seizure of 7, 796 cartoons of poultry product, and he seized 105 vehicles, and for general goods it is on record that he had also seized 18, 116 different types of general goods. “
Ejesieme said that Audi Sanni, Senior Inspector of Customs, was given award in March for his parade skill.
He noted that Sanni had received presidential award under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo for displaying fantastic parade skill.
“For April, we also have Chief Superintendent of Customs Jatau MG, he was actually given this award because of his spectacular achievement.
“In March 2013 alone, his team seized 980 bags of 50 kg parboiled rice and 1, 233 cartons of frozen poultry product.
“For the month of April, he had seized 537 bags of 50 kg parboiled rice bringing it to a total of 1, 517 bags of rice.
“One remarkable thing about this officer is his courage, resilient and dexterity particularly if you are conversant with Oyo axis, you will agree with me that place is very volatile.
“And this is an officer that each time he makes seizure he will bring them down to FOU from Oyo axis without even firing a shot.“
He said that Miss Kalu L.M, Customs Assistant 11, was also awarded in April for her dedication to her primary assignment.
Ejesieme said that Mr Inuwa Mohammed, FOU Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), urged the officers to be more dedicated in discharging their duties to enable the service achieve its objectives.
One of the awardees; Mr  Kirawa Abdulahi,  told journalists that  his teams had gone extra miles and had engaged the service of informant to source for information, adding that the idea was approved by the service.
“I really filled humble and highly honoured; this award is not for me alone but for the whole team.
“My advice to my colleagues is to put in their best and try to excel in their assignments so that they will serve as a good example to others who are coming behind.“
Another awardee, Mr Garuba Jatau, said that his dedication to the service prompted the award, adding that he had worked tirelessly to boost the image of the service.
