The Osun/Oyo Area Controller of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr Richard Oteri, has announced the seizure of 227 cartons of live ammunition on  Igboho road in Oyo State.
Briefing journalists in Ibadan, Oteri said the seized consignment contained a total of 56,750 rounds of live ammunition.
Oteri, who described the operation as "seizure of the moment,’’ said the ammunition was concealed in bags packed with dried cassava tubers.
"I am using this medium to appeal to our royal fathers and community leaders to enlighten and sensitise their wards on the attendant danger of smuggling. This is necessary in the light of the serious security challenges in our nation," he said.
He listed other seized items to include 2,716 bags of rice concealed with charcoal  and valued at N30.7 million as well as 28 fairly used  cars and jeeps worth N21.3 million.
Others were 2,500 cartons of frozen products with market value put at N12.5 million, a lorry loaded with 700 cartons of foreign shoes and a bus loaded with prohibited textile materials.
Oteri added that his men also seized 521 used tyres concealed in 600 bags of animal feeds in a trailer valued at N2.2 million.
On revenue, theController said N4.5 billion was collected by the command between January and April, as against N3.8 billion realised during the same period in 2012, indicating  an increase of 17 percent.
Oteri  also said that from January to April, a total of N49.02 million was realised from duty collected on 494 vehicles as against N24.03 million collected on 338 vehicles in the same period in 2012.
“We are determined to increase our revenue profile and at the same time work tirelessly in reducing the incidence of smuggling to the barest minimum," he said.
Oteri  handed over the seized ammunition to Mr Musa Kimo, a Deputy Commissioner of Police in  the Oyo State Police Command.
