"For licensed customs agent to classify and interpret the technical aspect of goods clearance from the port, there is need for them to understand modern procedures in the harmonise system (H.S.)".
This was the assertion of the Managing Director Eyis Resources Limited, Mr Lucky Eyis Amiwero at a training programme for licensed customs agents in Lagos yesterday.

Amiwero who told Shipping Position Daily in office said that with modern technologies in ports operation, licensed customs agents must be informed and enlightened about modern trends in carrying out their clearing procedures.
Mr Amiwero said that “the country is under the 2007 harmonised system when other countries of the world are using the 2012 harmonised system and it will be better to enlighten agents on the modern trends.
According to him, the programme is technical in which the World Customs Organisation is in charge of training. He stated that he was prepared to use his vast knowledge to impart on the clearing agents.
“It is not right to keep knowledge to ourselves and we need to impart into others modern training so that at the end of the day, they will be able to classify and interpret, in the country today, a lot of people have not mastered the art of interpreting", he stressed.
He added that in Nigeria, most of the licensed custom agents have not mastered the act of interpreting harmonised system, adding that the training will come in batches.
He also noted that the training will also aid agents in assisting the Government in areas of trade facilitating and to ease clearing of goods out of the Nigerian ports.
The training according to him, would also address problems that arise between agents and importers in the process of clearing of goods.
"We are trying to get as much agents as we can to know their job with ease and not be frustrated," he assured.
According to him, certifying the agent is not as important as  their knowing what they are doing in port business.
"We want to try all that we could to build capacities and to me it is what they can deliver that matters most", he stated.
