Ahead of completion of the strategic Onitsha River port, Anambra state, Government has said that it has concluded plans to concession it with a view to boosting business in the eastern part of the country.
Disclosing this on Tuesday in Lokoja, Kogi state, Managing Director National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Arch.Ahmed Aliyu Yar'Adua said that the port was about 98 per cent completed adding that plans have perfected to carrying the exercise as soon as possible.
Yar'Adua also disclosed that the Infrastructural Concession Regulation Commission (ICRC) has also appointed a consultant that will over both the bidding and concessioning process.
It was gathered that the government decided to concession the port following the successful dredging of the lower River Niger.
Our correspondent confirmed that importers and manufacturers have started making use of the waterways by moving materials from Lokoja and other parts of the country to Onitsha.
The NIWA boss who stated this during tour of the dredged river by members of the House of Representative Committee on Marine Transport also noted that the port is a great potential waiting to be tapped.
Speaking in similar vein, the Chairman of the Committee Honourable Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi said that everything must be done to make the port functional because it is strategic to the Eastern markets.
The committee was on a fact finding visitation to the on-going dredging of lower River Niger.
