As part effort to encourage used vehicle dealers in Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced its plan to carry along the motor vehicle dealers in the informal sub-sector of the automobile industry in its new auto policy implementation.

Director General of the National Automatic Council, Mr. Aminu Jalal, who disclosed this at a meeting with automobile traders in Lagos recently, noted that the dealers are integral part to the success of the automotive policy, put in place by the federal government as efforts to discourage importation of cars and encourage local vehicle manufacturing.
According to him, "currently, most vehicle dealer’s trade in used cars and it is the intention of the council that they become dealers in locally manufactured vehicles."
He explained that the council will introduce companies to manufacturers and offer support to those that met the requirements of becoming motor vehicle dealers in the registration guidelines.
The National Automotive Council boss further noted that "it is expected that in the nearest future, used vehicles sold in the country will be those generated locally and not from abroad.
Meanwhile, Jalal has said that to improve the quality of cars sold, all the vehicles imported into the country must have road-worthiness from their countries of origin.
Also the importers are to ensure that their vehicles obtain SON CAP, adding that these measures will ensure that only cars in good condition are imported into the country.
On the fate of imported used cars, Jalal said government will not ban importation, but will give Nigerians a better alternative which is brand new vehicles at affordable price.
"We will not ban tokunbo cars, but we will give Nigerians better alternative and will put a condition that will make Nigerians prefer new cars," he said.
