Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Electrical Electronics Engineers (NIEEE), Mr Adekunle Makinde has said that more public investment in rail and water transportation would stop cries over fuel subsidy removal.
Makinde told journalists in Lagos that diversification of the transport system would also enhance socio-economic development of the country.
The Company boss said the Federal Government should concentrate on reviving critical sectors like the rail transportation instead of deliberating on fuel subsidy removal..
He said that Nigerians were used to travelling by road and which was limiting government revenue generation from the transport sector.
“We rely so much on petrol in this country and this does not augur well for our economy, “ he said.
Makinde said that over-dependence on petrol had made it difficult for the people to welcome the proposal on fuel subsidy removal.
He urged the Federal Government not increase the pump price of petrol because that the initial removal of fuel subsidy had not impacted positively on the people.
“This is not the proper time to further remove subsidy on petroleum products.
“The masses have not felt the impact of the January 2012 implementation of the policy which made a litre of the product to go up to N97,” he said
Makinde said that government had not fulfilled most of the promises it made after it removed fuel subsidy in January 2012.
