The maritime consulting firm said that the first indigenous piracy symposium held last week in Lagos will become a regional programme whereby stakeholders outside Lagos can also understand the importance of the industry.

After a successful hosting of its maritime security and safety symposium for maritime practitioners last week, Diddan and Associates Consulting  has assured stakeholders in the maritime sector that it will continue to create more awareness programmes about piracy and the immediate response nationwide.

The maritime consulting firm said that the first indigenous piracy symposium held last week in Lagos will become a regional programme whereby stakeholders outside Lagos can also understand the importance of the industry.

Director of Programme of the organisation; Mr. Lucky Aghomi told journalists that there is need to come up with well defined procedures about emergency within the nation's maritime domain.

He also assured practitioners that the programme will be organised regionally come 2015 because according to him, government and the private sector need to key into the symposium, for the purpose of addressing piracy within the nation's domain.

Aghomi expressed the hope  that the symposium will continue to lead to more studies and contributions to developments in the fight against maritime piracy.

The first ‘indigenous’ symposium on maritime security and safety with the theme:"piracy and emergence response was attended by top officials from ECOWAS, NPA, NIMASA and the Nigeria Navy.

Others were the Commissioner of Police, Mrs Hilda Harrison, a Professor from the department of international relations, Obafemi Awolowo University,Professor Charles Ukejie, Ports Facilities Security Officers (PFSO) and a host of others.

Speaking on the impact of piracy, he stated that when a vessel is attack by pirates at the sea, freight forwarders, importers, exporters, ship owners, government agencies, ship owners, dockworkers and the consumers are all affected one way or the other, thus there is need for everyone in the sector to key into the symposium in curbing piracy through such kind of symposium.

Aghomi noted that emergency response on the case of pirate attack on Nigeria's waters will help reduce the menace and that was what the programme centred on.
