The Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone’ A’ in Ikeja has seized assorted contraband valued at about N100Million in the last two weeks.
Conducting news men round the seizures last week in Lagos, Controller of the command, Mr Dan Ugo (a Comptroller) disclosed that the seizures were made between May 20 and June 3, 2012 at different points within the command’s jurisdiction.
Prominent among the items seized were bales of second-hand clothing, used handbags and shoes, used tyres, poultry products, mosquito repellant coils as well as used fridges. Other items seized included two new Toyota Camry cars and an SUV which were cleared from the port as used vehicles.
According to the Controller, most of the items fall under schedule three of the revised Import Prohibition list of the Common External Tariff.
He also stressed that the Federal Government had in its wisdom placed some of these items on import prohibition list in consideration of the health hazards associated with them, and because of the need to protect local industries.
He also warned that the latest circular from the Customs headquarters on zero tolerance to importation of contraband, particularly poultry products will be aggressively pursued, even as he reiterated the readiness of the anti-smuggling outfit to combat smuggling and facilitate legitimate trade.
“There is a renewed vigour in our approach to anti-smuggling which is intelligence- based", he told the journalists,
He however attributed the successes recorded by the command  to the modalities put in place by the unit to checkmate the activities of some unpatriotic elements whose attitudes, of non- compliance with the Federal Government’s fiscal policies have been a clog in the wheel of economic progress.
Comptroller Ugo also vowed to sustain the war on smuggling in compliance with the admonishments of the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Abdullahi lnde Dikko and his management team.
