Ghanaian Vice President To Declare WAMA 2009 Open

The Vice President of Ghana, Mr John Mahama is expected to lead the crème de la crème of the decision makers in the maritime industry within the West Africa sub region to this year’s West Africa Maritime Award (MAMA) 2009 as the Chief Guest of Honour.

The decision makers will meet in the Ghanaian capital city of Accra at a stakeholders parley to work out strategies for improved maritime services and trade among countries in West Africa, to accelerate the eradication of poverty in the sub- region.

This stakeholders’ parley which is part of the total package comes under the auspices of the 2009 West Africa Maritime Business Roundtable; an event put together by promoters of the West Africa Business Support Services and West Africa Maritime Awards (WAMA) to compliment efforts by national governments to achieve equitable socio-economic and political integration of West Africa, with the maritime industry as a veritable vehicle.

The roundtable with the theme “Regional Maritime Trade and Poverty Eradication in West Africa will hold on Friday, October 9, 2009, at the Airport West Hotel, Accra – Ghana. Eminent resource persons from within and outside the sub region will make presentations and discuss salient issues that are responsible for West Africa being outside several trends in the global supply chain.

Issues to be discussed include the role of seaports in the fight to eradicate poverty in West Africa, maritime and trade financing under current global economic downturn and how West Africa supply chain can become globally competitive.

The stakeholders’ roundtable will be rounded off in the evening with this year’s edition of the West Africa Maritime Awards Night, the only regional industry awards ceremony dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, integrity and quality service in maritime activities across the sub-region.

The corporate award recipients include the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Port Autonome du Lome, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) as well as SETV of Bollore Group, operator of the Abidjan Container Terminal.

For the individual category, winners include Capt Arian Turkson, Rector of the Regional Maritime University – Tema, Mr Peter Azuma of the Ghana Maritime Authority and pioneer Director General of NIMASA, Mrs Mfon Ekong Usoro, Dr.(Mrs)Marian Alli, Chairperson-Governing Board of the Nigerian Shippers Council, for their exemplary contributions to the growth of the industry.
