How Trawler Captains Conspire With Sea Robbers

Even as attacks on fishing trawlers continue to be on the increase, Captains of such vessels have been alleged to be conniving with the sea robbers for ransom to be paid by the fishing companies in exchange for their freedom.
Insider sources within the various seafarers associations disclosed to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, that some of the attacks on trawlers are mastermind of the captains of such vessels and some crew.

Even as attacks on fishing trawlers continue to be on the increase, Captains of such vessels have been alleged to be conniving with the sea robbers for ransom to be paid by the fishing companies in exchange for their freedom.
Insider sources within the various seafarers associations disclosed to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos, that some of the attacks on trawlers are mastermind of the captains of such vessels and some crew.
According to our sources, the sea robbers have the contacts of some the captains and whenever they are about to sail ,they  allegedly communicate their movement to the sea robbers.
Our correspondent was told that, the most common meeting points are the waters in Bayelsa ,Delta and Rivers States respectively.
We also gathered that some captains of trawlers deliberately violate the no sail order to some volatile areas. Some of the bad spots are listed as: Ramos, Andoni, Bartholomew and Fish town.
Sources also disclosed that apart, almost all the fishing companies (except one) usually pay ransom for their captains and crew whenever issues of kidnapping and hijack of vessel occur.
The sources also alleged that most of the captains have made fortunes from the business of conniving with sea robbers, even as they further told our correspondent that some of captain get suspended by their employers because of series of lies about been abducted, by the sea robbers.
Although the sources affirmed that attack on trawlers is now a regular occurrence, but they also alleged that some of such attacks are staged-managed  by the crew onboard.
However, they called on the concerned authorities like the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies to look inward in the fight against piracy and se robbery.
