In response to the ongoing debates surrounding the proposed introduction of the International Cargo Tracking Note (ICTN), the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) has announced plans to organize a crucial roundtable discussion aimed at resolving the controversies once and for all. As the leading maritime beat association in the industry, MARAN seeks to examine all pertinent issues related to the ICTN and propose lasting solutions.

The roundtable, scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2025, will take place at the MARAN International Press Center in Apapa. It will bring together key industry stakeholders to dissect the subject matter and chart a way forward. Among the notable participants expected are Dr. Eugene Nweke of the Sea Empowerment and Research Center (SEREC) and Dr. Segun Musa, Managing Director of Widescope Group, who will deliver insightful addresses.

Other critical stakeholders include: Dr. Alban Igwe of the Importers Association of Nigeria and a representative from the Shippers’ Association of Lagos State (SALS). Additionally, two major government agencies will present perspectives on the ICTN. The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), the current custodian of the ICTN, will deliver a paper titled *”Prospects and Challenges of the Proposed ICTN: NSC’s Perspective,”* while the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the former custodian of the project, will speak on *”Prospects and Challenges of the Proposed ICTN: NPA’s Perspective.”

Speaking on the importance of the roundtable, Mr. Godfrey Bivbere, President of MARAN, emphasized the urgent need to resolve the controversies surrounding the ICTN. “Since the news of the planned reintroduction of the ICTN emerged, there has been widespread debate between supporters and opponents, each presenting strong arguments for their positions,” Bivbere stated.

He added, “This issue has polarized the maritime industry. As the leading maritime beat association in Nigeria and in line with our advocacy role, MARAN has decided to bring all stakeholders together to settle this matter once and for all. This is essential for the progress and development of our sector, which is vital to the nation’s economy.”

The roundtable aims to foster constructive dialogue, address concerns, and provide clarity on the ICTN, ensuring that the maritime industry can move forward with a unified approach.
