The indefinite Indian dockworker strike that was to begin on 17th December has been averted as the government accepted dockworkers’ demands. The Indian government has honored its agreement with the dockworkers’ union that was signed in September, leading to the conflicts being resolved and the strike being averted.
The Indian dock workers’ unions had threatened to go on an indefinite strike if their demands of pay revisions and productivity schemes were not implemented by 15th December. However, negotiations between the government and the workers turned out successful, with updated wage agreements and other demanded benefits being implemented.
The strike would have involved around 18,000 dockworkers and impacted 12 ports across India. The Ministry of Shipping in India has directed the Indian Ports Association to enforce these revised terms and has alleviated concerns of shutdowns across Indian ports that would have severely impacted trade operations.
