Apparently worried by the dwindling interest with which transport- related courses are being studied at tertiary institutions across Nigeria, the Institute of Transport Administration (IOTA) Nigeria has said that it has began moves to ensure that the interest in transport studies is rekindled in Nigerian institutions.
The institute also said that it is worried about the slow pace with which the transformation policies that have been initiated in transport sector are being carried out at managerial levels in Nigeria.

In a document signed by the Sole Administrator of IOTA, Prince G.O Don-Aki and made available to Shipping Position Daily, the institute harped on the need for tertiary institutions to prepare and train the trainers for actions necessary before year 2020 and beyond.
According to the document, there is need to “begin to lay strategic structure that would challenge the challengers in training and research in transport; the era of transportation should begin as there would be an increasing need of transport activities”.
“Yet we have little to show how it could affect the economic turn-around at the managerial levels in Nigeria, IOTA considers this precarious situation worrisome and needing advance nurturing into a big national transformational movement” the document reads in part.
To correct this however, the institute said that there is need to train the trainers for actions necessary before year 2020 and beyond, hence,  it is organizing a two- day programme on “transport management and organization in developing economy”.
The programme is expected to hold from 30th to 31st of August 2012 and it is envisaged that it will provide an opportunity for all tertiary institutions to have additional insight in respect of the accelerated transport improvement in the planned national economic turnaround.
“There will be opportunity to graciously exchange experiences with the leading transport professional facilitators on related training issues bordering on new and modified techniques that will be applied to specific transport modes to make the economic emancipation to flourish well”
According to the institute, facilitators for the training programme have been drawn from Nigerian universities, among them are; the former acting vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO) in Imo State, Professor Innocent Ogwude, he is expected to deliver a keynote address and a paper titled, “organized and applicable transport research”.
Others are; Associate Professor Callistus Ibe from the department of transport management technology, FUTO, and Professor Eno Okoko from the department of transport management technology, Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Ondo State.
