Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Mr Olumide Ogunmade said yesterday that pipeline vandalism would reduce with the adoption of advance monitoring system.
Ogunmade told newsmen in Lagos that the current technology being used to monitor pipeline vandalism was inadequate.
He urged the NNPC to use the state- of- the- art technology for effective surveillance of the pipelines.
“Another way of curbing vandalism of our crude oil pipelines is to meet stiffer sanctions and punishment to oil pipeline vandals.

“We have not seen anybody or heard of a conviction or jail term of life imprisonment for pipeline vandals in this country. “
Ogunmade also alleged that some government officials were aiding and abetting vandals to sabotage the oil pipelines.
“It can be assumed that some officials of government are paying lip service to the problem of pipeline vandalism if those arrested are released without due punishment,’’ Ogunmade said.
He said that pipeline vandalism had ruined the nation’s economy and was affecting the prospects of legitimate businessmen and women in the sector.
Ogunmade said that more patrol vehicles and security personnel should be deployed to fight the vandals.
