The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has charged all maritime training institutions awarding  National Innovative Diploma (NID) to close their admission by the end of October 2013.

The JAMB has also disclosed that in its next examination, candidates are expected to choose a University, Polytechnic, College of Education and one NID-awarding institution to further promote such specialized schools.

Maritime institutes that award the NID certificate includes: Emdee Shipping and Maritime College in Apapa, Stars Maritime Academy in Itele Ogun State, Global Maritime Academy in Warri Delta State, Certified Institute of Shipping in Badagry;  Lagos, ,Lagos .
At the outcome of the recent meeting with officials of JAMB in Ondo state, which also had the NID awarding schools in attendance, it was directed that such institutes must end their admission irrespective of the number of intakes by October.

Our sources disclosed that the meeting was quite fruitful and the technical session was in favour of such specialised schools.

According to our sources, JAMB has warned all the institutes involved not to admit any candidate that does not meet the 150 cut-off mark to keep the standard in check.

"NID is a new product in the educational sector of the country ,therefore JAMB is eager to promote it so that candidates will not rely on the conventional University, Polytechnic and Colleges of Education system of admission alone”, a source disclosed.

He said that were it not that the NID programme was incorporated in the JAMB brochure, most candidates would never have thought of making a career in these technical schools.

"A panel was set up by JAMB to work with schools’ representatives directly with  a view to ensuring that the admission process is carried out properly", he added.

Shipping Position Daily also gathered that all NID-awarding institutes have been advised by JAMB to embark on aggressive awareness campaign programme through the media to enable the public to get firsthand knowledge about their existence.
