About four months after elections were conducted into the national executive council of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), the outcome as been upheld by the federal ministry of labour and productivity.
The declaration was part of the highpoint of a conciliatory meeting which was called by the ministry between the elected leadership of the union and another group which claimed to have conducted a parallel elections in Lagos on the eve of the union’s delegates conference which held in Benin Edo state.
Apart from the ministry’s endorsement, participants at the meeting also agreed that the parallel elections which reportedly produced Comrade Ayo Balogun was illegal.
A copy of the communiqué which was signed by he two groups reads in part: “That he election purportedly held in Lagos was observed not to have followed the procedures outlined in the Trade Union Act Cap 437 LFN 1990 and therefore that election is not valid”.
But the high powered meeting gave a clean bill of health to the elections which held in Benin and declared that:”the election held in Edo State was however conducted in full compliance with the provisions of the extant legislation and is therefore recognized”.
In the communiqué which was signed by top members of the union including the incumbent president general, Comrade Nted Tony Emmanuel, the immediate predecessor, Comrade Onikolease Irabor and the man who purportedly won the now outlawed Lagos elections, Comrade Ayo Balogun.
The meting which held last Thursday in Abuja was also attended by observers from the Nigerian Labour Congress and members of the MWUN and the acting director, trade union services and industrial relations in the ministry, Mrs O. Olanrewaju who also signed the document.
The communiqué which was signed by other members of the MWUN executives including the president of dockworkers branch, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju confirmed that all the parties have agreed to embrace peace and immediately commence the process of reconciliation
