Lagos Government Partners NUPENG to Expand Orile, Ijora Truck Parks

There are indications that the hitherto frosty relationship between the Lagos State Government and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) unit of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has been amended as the duo has entered a fresh agreement to expand the Orile and Ijora truck terminals for the union.

In a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, Chairman of the Lagos Zonal Council of the PTD, Alhaji Nojeem Korodo said that the union is embarking on the expansion of its Orile truck park which has been affected by the ongoing road construction along Badagry expressway.
Also, Korodo lamented that the renovation works at the Ijora axis in Lagos has drastically reduced the space that was allocated by the Lagos State government to tanker driver for their trucks.
“The construction around Orile has reduced drastically the number of trucks the area can accommodate, but we are also considering phase 2 and 3, it was only one phase that was commissioned to urgently address the problem at that time, but now since the expansion has reduced it again we are now ready to fast-track the phase 2 and phase 3”
According to him, it was only phase one of the Ijora truck park that was constructed initially, but the union is now thinking of building the phase 2 in order to bring in more petroleum tankers.
“The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa has keyed into the idea”
“It is because of the mutual understanding that we are having, that is why you don’t see any confrontation between us anymore, and that is the beauty of democracy” Korodo stated.
