Fresh indications emerged that the Lagos seaports have been recording a decline in the volume of vehicles imported into the country; as a total of 9,171 units of both used and new vehicles have been recorded in the month of April 2013 as against the 12,474 units that was recorded in March.
Statistics from the Nigerian Ports Authority [NPA] revealed that 1,370 units of new vehicles were imported into the country through the seaport in Lagos, while 6617 units of used vehicles were reported to have been imported in April.

However, 3000 units of unclassified vehicles were handled at the Tin Can Island port in Lagos last month.
The document also revealed that the number of carriers also dropped in April, as the month of April saw arrival of 23 vessels as against 33 that sailed into the port in March.
However, Five Star Logistics terminal still handled the highest number of imported vehicles with 5,245 units of used vehicles, followed by Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited [PTML] with 3,000 units of vehicles.
Standard Flour Mills recorded 1,390 units of only used vehicles in the month of April 2013 as against the 1,485 units recorded in March.
Five Star Logistics and PTML both handled 10 vessels each, while Standard Flour Mills recorded only three vessels laden with vehicle in the previous month.
It would be recalled that importation of vehicles through the seaports in January stood at 9,204 units, while February recorded 9,735 units.
Dramatic Increase In Motor Vehicle Imports For Dar Es Salaam
Motor vehicle imports through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam increased by 50% over an eight-month period ending February 2013, when compared with the similar period ending February 2012.
The number of imports reached 83,440 units, up from 55,819, reports the Tanzanian Daily News.
The same report said that general overall traffic through the port increased by 20% from 6.935 million tonnes to 8.314 million tonnes for the period between July 2012 and February 2013, as compared with the similar period 12 months earlier.
A spokesperson for Tanzania Ports Authority said the increase in volumes was due to improved efficiency corresponding with a business boom and as a result of investments in new cargo handling equipment and infrastructure plus employee training.
