Liberia Pledges Continued Partnership With APM Terminal As New Wharf Is Dedicated

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has dedicated the new marginal wharf at the National Port Authority with a promise that government's partnership with the APM Terminal will continue.
The APM Terminal  signed a concession agreement with the Liberian Government to manage the pier of the National Port Authority for a period of 25 years.
In the dedication of the new marginal wharf at the National Port Authority Wednesday President Sirleaf said that government had signed the concession with the APM Terminal because the country port was in dangerous situation.

The APM Terminal  signed a concession agreement with the Liberian Government to manage the pier of the National Port Authority for a period of 25 years.
In the dedication of the new marginal wharf at the National Port Authority Wednesday President Sirleaf said that government had signed the concession with the APM Terminal because the country port was in dangerous situation.
President Sirleaf told the gathering that when the contract between government and the APM Terminal was signed in 2010, the National Port Authority was in dire straits.
"We signed the agreement because the country was in a dangerous situation for the pier that could fall anytime which could have caused our economy to come to a halt" President Sirleaf said.
She said that the provision of the concession agreement signed by the government and APM Terminal that have to deal with the increase in tariffs will be worked upon for the benefit of the Liberian people.
President Sirleaf however lauded the staff and workers of the APM Terminal for the job well done as well those who work led to the signing of the agreement.
The Liberian leader called on the management of the APM to begun to start to improve other areas of the port in order for the NPA to be a first class full port facility.
National Port Authority Managing Director Matilda Parker during the occasion lauded the Terminal for building the marginal wharf adding that through the partnership the two entities have come together.
APM Terminal head for Business Development Soren Jakobson who spoke on behalf management indicated that when the concession agreement was signed with government in 2010 to operate the port the condition of the marginal wharf was in the danger of collapse which could have been a disaster for the trade moving in and out of the port and for the people of Liberia.
He said that the project of building the marginal wharf was completed nine months ahead of the schedule and to the highest international standards and that the new infrastructure will be of great benefit and prosperity to Liberia and its people by enabling Liberia to trade more efficiently with the world.
The APM head of Business and Development also stated that APM has already approved further investments beyond the commitment made to government and that investments include additional paving of the concession area, drainage, new offices, cargo gates and access control technology to further enhance the capacity and the service provided to the shipping lines, importer and exporter.
He said in the two and half years of operation of APM Terminals in Liberia has been a very positive experience and that they have been welcomed by the people of Liberia.
