The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, Durumi in Abuja, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).

The Chairman of NIMASA’s CSR committee; Hajia Lami Tumaka,  made the donation when she led a delegation of the management staff to the Durumi IDPs camp.

The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside inaugurated the CSR committee to go to various parts of the country where assistance is needed and support them.

According to Tumaka, the committee has selected Abuja, Niger, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as the first set of states to be visited to give various forms of assistance.

“We look at the situation of those in the IDPs camps and decided it was time for NIMASA, which is a socially responsible agency, to come and make our contributions and a committee was set up for it

“It is not the amount that is important, it’s the thought behind it. You cannot quantify our thinking of it and making it actionable. That is more important than the monetary aspect that has gone into it,” she said.

Tumaka also commended the Federal Government for the effort put in place to assist those in the camps and also the security in those camps.

She called on well-meaning Nigerians and other government agencies to reach out to the IDPs, stating that more needed to be done in terms of welfare.

Responding, Ibrahim Halilu, the Coordinator of Durumi IDPs Camp, commended the agency for reaching out to those in the camp.

He said that the agency came at a crucial period, the month of Ramadan, when food was needed in the camp.

Halilu, however, faulted the committee in charge of the IDPs at the National Assembly for refusing to check on them and do the needful.

The various items, including mattresses, cartons of noodles, bottle water, bags of garri, bags of rice, bags of sugar, diapers, amongst others were donated.
